Frequently asked questions
How much does moving into a cooperative apartment cost?
On top of the first rent there are usually share certificates (entry capital that you normally get back when you leave) and a rent deposit. For apartments the deposit may be at most three months' rent (Art. 257e CO). Each cooperative sets the amount of the share certificates itself.
Can I pay the share certificates with my pension fund?
An early withdrawal from your pension fund is possible for share certificates in a housing cooperative (Art. 3 let. a WEFV), but only for the home you live in yourself. Consider taxes and a lower pension: ask your pension fund first.
Do I get the share certificates back?
Usually yes, when you move out and the cooperative takes the shares back. The exact terms are in the cooperative's statutes.
